💼 THE INSTITUTION 💼
- An old friend of Jonty and Portia, Rupert Giles is returning to his roots on the Saltburnt estate for the first time in years. Newly widowed, he's looking to rediscover old relationships and find some way to connect with his wayward eldest daughter.
BACKSTORY:
Rupert first met Jonty and Portia at university, where they quickly became firm friends. Along with his girlfriend (soon to be wife) Joyce and their friends Alicent and Stephen, he spent a number of happy years in their company, and did his best to hold on to those connections through the years as their lives took them away from each other.
After moving to Joyce's hometown in California, Rupert believed he would be content to settle down with Joyce and raise their two daughters, Buffy and Dawn. Unfortunately, he discovered it wasn't going to be as easy as that. He was never able to truly adjust to living in America, and missed England enough that he started splitting his time across the Atlantic, taking a professorship post at Oxford while also teaching at UCLA. The distance between Rupert and his family grew. Eventually, Joyce fell ill and Rupert moved back to California to care for her full-time until she died, leaving him to raise the girls alone.
With Dawn freshly enrolled in college, Rupert has taken the chance to bring Buffy home to England with him, hoping that some space from certain temptations in California will bring her around and help her concentrate on her ice skating career, and maybe the presence of his younger brother and his old friends can offer some much-needed perspective.

💼 Alicent and Rupert had an affair of some kind when they were younger. Rupert goes to great lengths to keep this information secret, though it's obvious he still carries a torch for "Allie".
💼 Although he often complains about her rebellious attitude and seems to hold her to an absurdly high standard, Buffy is Giles' favourite, and he will move heaven and earth to make sure she's happy.

💼 Rupert claims to be in Saltburnt for Buffy's sake, but it seems as though he's definitely throwing himself into the party atmosphere, and has already been spotted down in the clubs and bars with some interesting "friends" young enough to be Buffy's dates..
💼 One morning, Ani Mikheeva was spotted sneaking out of Giles’ guest suite wearing one of his Oxford shirts and humming some tragic-sounding ballad in Russian. He later claimed she "just needed somewhere quiet to sleep."
💼 Portia said they had a moment in the rose garden — Ani in her fur stole, Giles with a book in hand. She took the book from him, dropped it, and said something about how she’d rather be read.
💼 Giles gave Ani a book of Shakespeare’s sonnets. She returned it with lipstick on every line about lust and death. During dinner, Giles lit her cigarette for her and Ani licked her lips after every drag. Jonty said it was "like watching a Jane Austen novel be filmed by a French porn director."
